Bass Fishing Boats - Essential Advice For First Time Buyers

Bass fishing is a pastime enjoyed by many from all walks of life, young and old alike. Once you get the taste of bass fishing, you might decide that you want to venture into buying your first fishing boat. Get some advice before you buy, as a first time bass boat buyer.

First, make sure that you have the right kind of vehicle so that you can tow your bass boat. A lot of vehicles are simply not equal to the demands of this. A fully loaded boat can weigh as much as 3,500 pounds – quite a lot to tow, as any one will admit. Be sure to have a car or truck which is capable of towing this much weight uphill.

The Right Size and Material

When you are trying to decide what size of boat you will need, think about where you’ll be doing most of your fishing. On a larger body of water, you’ll probably want a boat which is at least 19 feet in length. If you're going to be fishing in smaller bodies of water, a boat with a small outboard motor and of smaller dimensions as well will be fine. In addition, your boat's material should be considered. A bass boat will usually be made of aluminum or fiberglass. There are pros and cons to each material. Aluminum fishing boats may be a good option if you're going to be fishing in a small lake.

For a smoother ride on larger bodies of water, a fiberglass boat is the way to go. Fiberglass is generally more expensive then aluminum but not in all cases. The fiberglass boats are sturdier than the aluminum and they will not be blown around with the wind as much. Before you choose fiberglass or aluminum, consider all the options, and the advantages and disadvantages to each before you make your decision.

New or Used?

There are used and new boats available. There are again, pros and cons associated with each. Used fishing boats seem to hold their value much longer but you have to eep in mind that outboard motors are generally short lived. If you opt to buy a used bass fishing boat then you’ll want to test the motor before handing over your money. A used boat is generally going to be much cheaper, which is another advantage. Keep in mind that you often get what you pay for, so if you get the boat very cheaply, you may have to do some repairs before you can use it.

A new boat has one huge advantage over a used one – a warranty. You won't have to worry about fixing it up and can just start fishing with it. You’ll also have a wider variety of options than you would when shopping for used boats. No matter which way you decide to go, be sure to check out the vessel thoroughly, so that you know what you are buying.
